  • Obesity

    Obesity is a long-term condition in which excess body fat raises the risk of other health problems. In the UK it is usually identified using BMI, with 30 or above indicating obesity and 25 to 29.9 indicating overweight, alongside waist measurement and a person's wider health.

    Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin and cannot maintain normal blood glucose. Excess weight, particularly around the abdomen and liver, is the single largest modifiable driver of that resistance.

    Metabolic syndrome is not a single disease but a cluster of risk factors that occur together and, in combination, raise the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes more than any one of them alone. The components are abdominal obesity, raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, raised triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol.
